Morrisons Supermarket study, St Ives

In collaboration with the Dementia Research Centre, UCL, the studio conducted a dementia inclusive design study for Morrisons supermarkets, specifically their newly completed store in St. Ives. Though the store had incorporated a number of architectural features that would specifically benefit the elderly and those certain types dementia, the subsequent report highlighted how further adaptations could be made to improve the accessibility of the environment.

One aspect that was continually remarked upon during the study was the importance of staff receiving a form of ‘dementia awareness’ training so they can assist customers living with the disease. Though not strictly a design problem, it an aspect that is often overlooked when these studies are conducted, however, there are a number of design features that would have to be implemented if such training was to go ahead.
